Building the Body through Song

I Sing Because … was formed to build community among members of different churches, beginning in the Riverside, California, area. The distinctions that separate various denominations are fewer and less significant than what we share in faith and heritage. The act of singing together has the physiological and psychological effect of bonding. Conscious recognition becomes easier. Members of the Body of Christ come to appreciate each other more fully. To the extent that we function more effectively as one, we can expect to have a greater positive impact on society. The same need for mutual recognition and appreciation exists among people everywhere, regardless of whether the distinctions are religious, philosophical, social, racial, political, national, etc.

I Sing Because … has been building community through the experience of singing together since July 25, 1993. Holding its 60-minute songfest the last Sunday of each month in a different Christian church in the greater Riverside area, I Sing Because … has entertained guests from 16 states outside California, from Massachusetts to Hawaii, from Australia, Spain, Brazil and Mexico, as well as a member of the local Jewish congregation and many who indicated they had no home church. Over 1500 people have attended at least once as the I Sing Because … program has been hosted by over 35 different Riverside churches or community centers. Using the songbooks and hymnals from the Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Christian Reformed, The Salvation Army, Presbyterian, Seventh-Day Adventist, Brethren Congregational, and many other traditions of the greater Church, we find the differences to be harmonious. Action choruses allow us to be children again, further reducing barriers.
